It was interesting talking to my SIL this evening. She and her fiance are in the process of getting him here to CA from Australia. Who knew this would/could be such a long and difficult process.
One option, the best right now, is for him to secure a job and he would have a Visa within a week or so. The only problem is trying to get interviews over the phone and having a company wait up to a month for him to start.
Second option is a lottery that he has entered that will be drawn in May. If he's given one of these spots he will be given a Green card, the only catch is that he can't come over until Oct, when the fiscal year starts again.
Third option is for the US to get off their ass and complete the new forms so that he can get a 12 month work Visa without having a job secured. I can't remember what she called it, but the US made a packed AUS so that people are free to work back and forth without all the run around of the above listed things. We are dragging our feet on the paper work, the bill for this was sign back in Aug. In AUS, the paper work was ready by Oct.
Fourth option would be to jump up the wedding and go shotgun style. I doubt this will happen, but we'll see. I really think that they want to have a celebration with family, with proper planning and the whole nine.
My heart goes out for her. They are both very frustrated with the situation. It will work out and they will love each other even more for it, something about absents makes the heart grow fonder.
